Because this beef and broccoli recipe is easy, you don't have to spend a ton of time in the kitchen. It's packed with flavor and pairs nicely with any type of rice. I chose to do brown rice, but I will be trying cauliflower rice in future for an even more healthier version. I also used mushrooms instead of broccoli since I'm not a fan of broccoli.

Equipment

  • sauce pan or Wok
  • mixing bowls
  • large ziploc bag

Ingredients

  • 1-1.5 pounds flank steak cut into thin strips
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil, divided
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 1-2 teaspoons ginger, can use dried ginger (use less if dried)
  • 1/2 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3/4 dark brown sugar, can use light brown as well
  • 2-3 thinly sliced green onions
  • red pepper flakes to taste
  • sesame seeds, optional for garnishing

Instructions

  1. In a large ziploc bag, add the steak, cornstarch. Seal and toss to coat. Set aside while preparing the sauce
  2. In a medium sauce pan, add 1 tablespoon olive oil, garlic, ginger, and heat over medium to high for about 1 minute or until garlic fragrant. Be careful not to burn garlic
  3. Add the soy sauce, water, brown sugar, and stir until sugar is dissolved. Bring to a boil for about 2-3 minutes. Then reduce heat to low and simmer for about 5 minutes or until slightly thickened.
  4. In a large skillet, add the remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil, 1 tablespoon sesame oil, ant the steak. Cook until steak is cooked through, flipping the pieces intermittently.
  5. Add the broccoli. I used Mushrooms since I'm not a fan of broccoli
  6. Toss the beef and broccoli into the soy sauce mixture and coat evenly. Simmer for about 3-5 minutes
  7. Turn off the heat and stir in green onions
  8. Sprinkle with red pepper flakes and sesame seeds
  9. Serve over rice
