Friendsmas is very similar to Friendsgiving except is has more of a Christmas vibe than a Thanksgiving one. Friendsmas is for the people who loooves celebrating Christmas. Personally, I'm more of a Friendsmas girl. I love celebrating Christmas and enjoy the non-traditional food. Friendsmas can be a girls night or can be a co-ed holiday party. It's up to you. There's no rules on how to throw a Friendsmas party.

No need to stress. Whether it's your first Friendsmas party or your third, I've got you covered. I'm going to make hosting a Friendsmas party super easy for you.

Step by Step Guide to Planning the Best Friendsmas Party

Guest List - Who are you going to invite to Friendsmas?

Who you will be inviting to Friendsmas will dictate how the rest of your party planning will go. So many other aspects of your party are based on who's coming. The food, the venue, decor, etc. Do you want Friendsmas to be a girls night or do you want a co-ed party? If you're having Friendsmas at your house, how many people can comfortably fit inside of your home? Regardless of who is coming, I like to keep my guest list between 8-12 people. I love an intimate gathering.

When do you want to host your Friendsmas party?

The holidays is one of the busiest travel time besides summer. You'll want to settle on date super early so you can ensure most of your guests will be in town or not committed to other holiday parties. If you have time, maybe poll your guests to see what date works for the majority. Everyone is trying to squeeze in time with family and friends so make sure your Friends is on their calendar way ahead of time!

What food do you want to have at your Friendsmas party?

I don't know about you, but when December hit, I don't want any turkey or Thanksgiving like food period. I like having food themes for Friendsmas. This year, Friendsmas is potluck style and we are bringing finger foods/appetizers. Other food themes you can do for Friendsmas are:

  • Everyone bring a dish that correlates to the first letter of their name. For example, Ashley brings apple pie, Meka brings meatballs, and so forth.
  • BYOB, bring your own boards. Everyone brings a dish thats served on a board. Think a non-traditional charcuterie board. I did a BYOB girls night. You can read about it here.

For cocktails, you can make a Friendsmas punch or have guest bring drinks or both. My holiday cocktail will be my famous Spiked Apple Cider.

Send out those invitations!

You have the guest list, the date, and the food menu. Now it's time to send out those invitations. Remember time is of the essence to ensure your guests will be available.

I love sending digital invitations. I will check my phone before I check the mailbox, so digital is ALWAYS my go-to. Lately, I've been using Partiful app for my digital invites. I really like that your guest can make comments in the invitation, you can add a questionnaire (perfect if you're doing a potluck style Friendsmas. Guests can comment what they're bringing). If you want every to contribute and you purchase all the food, there's a chip-in feature to collect money when guests RSVP.

I've also used Evite app to send out digital invitations. They have an array of templates you can use for any occasion. A new feature Evite has now is sign-up sheets. You can add your menu and let your guests pick what they want to bring. The data will automatically update when a guest picks a menu item. If you still rather use the Partiful app, you can link your Evite sign up sheet to any platform.

Make sure you put a deadline for RSVPing to ensure you will have enough food and know what food you will have at Friendsmas.

Friendsmas party themes

Coming up with a party theme is one of my favorite things I like about hosting a party. If you decide on a theme, this makes it a little bit more easier with choosing party decor. If you do decide on a theme/party attire, make sure you include that in your Friendsmas invitations. Here are some of the top Friendsmas party themes.

  • Ugly Christmas Sweater
  • Christmas pajama party
  • Winter Wonderland
  • A Gatsby Christmas
  • Merry & Mimosas brunch
  • Merry Grinchmas
  • Wreaths & Wine
  • Christmas Candle Making
  • Stockings and Sips
  • Christmas Cookies & Cocktails
