When I first started blogging, I used a free WordPress theme. I was operating on a limited budget in the beginning, plus I was new to blogging and WordPress. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on something until I found my footing. 

Honestly, I wish I would've just paid for a WordPress theme. The free ones never gave me what I was looking for. Premium WordPress themes, offers more features, customizable, up-to-date, works well with plug-ins, comes with support.

Compatibility 

You want to use a WordPress theme that is compatible with the current version of WordPress. Using a theme that's non-compatibility can cause errors to your layout and make it difficult to manage your blog.

Usability

Is the WordPress theme easy to use? Most people read blogs on their mobile devices. Because of this, you want to make sure their mobile view is readable.

Features

You want to assess what type of features does this WordPress theme offer? Some features includes plug-ins, support, frequent updates, buttons, and more depending on the theme.
