In 2015, I moved to Washington D.C. not knowing a single person. My first thought was "what in the world did I get myself into?" My second thought was "how am I going to make friends?"
Making friends as an adult can also be scary and nerve racking. With these tips, you'll be out there making friends in no time.

How to Find Friends
When I first moved to D.C., I was like how am I going to find some friends. I typically try to make friends outside of the workplace, although, that's where I met two of my closest friends. It all started with, "what are you doing for lunch?" LOL. Here are some other ways to find friends
Facebook Groups
Facebook groups were pivotal in my journey for making friends. I searched DMV in Facebook to see what groups popped up. When I relocated to Atlanta, I did the same thing. The Facebook Groups I am apart of are listed below.

Hobbies
Your hobbies are another way you can find friends. I love being active, working out, anything health & wellness. Before I relocated to D.C., I was apart of this virtual fitness group called Tone It Up. We were able to connect with other girls through using #TIU on Instagram. I used location hashtags to find Tone It Up girls in my area. We met up a lot for fitness classes. Next time you go to a fitness class or the gym, introduce yourself to someone new.
How to Maintain Friendships
Everyone has their own expectations and what they are looking for in a friend. Write down what you are looking for in a friend. What type of qualities are you looking for? What are some things you'd like to do.
What does a friend mean to you?
Use the word "friend" loosely. Everyone has their own definition of what a friend means to them. Your definition may not match someone's definition. Communicate what you are looking for in a friend.
Diversify your friend group
One thing that has played a major role in maintaining friends is finding a friend that fits in every category of things I like to do. I have a fitness friend, a foodie friend, a travel friend, a let's try to beat the sun home friend, etc. This works because you're not leaning on one friend to do everything with. It's not a realistic expectation.

Be on time
Everyone has that super late friend, don't let that be you! Time is precious. People have a million things to do, but they chose to carve out time to spend with you. Be respectful of that and show up on time! If you're not going to be on time, let them know in advance.
Don't be flaky
If you tell someone you are coming to meet up with them, don't flake. Be reliable. Nothing will kill a budding friendship faster than a flaky person.
Communication
Communication is the key to all relationships. Communicate if you aren't going to be on time. Communicate if you are not going to be able to make an event. Communicate if something is bothering you. People are not mind readers. Communicate!
Bonus Tip
Be comfortable with going out alone. I have met people by going to a restaurant and sitting at a bar. Don't be afraid to talk to the person sitting next to you.
